Plasma Games Educator Hall of Fame - May Spotlight

As this school year comes to a close, we want to continue celebrating the incredible hard work and dedication that teachers bring to the classroom every day. This month, our Plasma Games Educator Hall of Fame proudly features another outstanding educator who is making a powerful impact on the lives of students.
We are excited to share that Nancy Bryant Caffee is May's Plasma Games Educator Hall of Famer. Nancy teaches a variety of subjects, including high school Earth and Space Science, Chemistry, and Physical Science, as well as 8th grade physical science, in the Blount County School District in Alabama, and has been in the classroom for 40 years. New adventures await Nancy as she retires at the end of this school year. On behalf of Plasma Games, we would like to thank you for your dedication to your students, and we wish you the best in your next chapter.
What’s your favorite part of being a science teacher?
I love the fun part of doing science! After teaching for 40 years, I still love it when a light bulb goes off and the student understands the material.
Most memorable moment in the classroom?
One of the most memorable moments in the classroom was in 7th grade life science when we captured cell division in a sample of pond water. One student who was looking through the microscope at the sample is now a pharmacist.
Another favorite activity for me and the students in the classroom for physical science was building and launching rockets.
Also, I will never forget the year that I received $15,000 in grant money to build an outdoor classroom. The students dug a pond themselves, and my best workers were the ones who did not like to do the "book" work. My classes spent many days outside working on planting and observing nature.
What is your favorite Plasma Games resource, and why?
I am pleased with many of the resources. One thing I use are the field guides, which pack a wealth of information into a small area.
Anything else you’d like to share?
I have enjoyed every moment of teaching science. I feel like I have been paid to do something I love doing, so it does not seem like work. I tell my students to find something they love to do and make it their career, and they will never have to go to a job where they are not happy. I still plan on staying involved in the science teaching world. I will serve on the Alabama Science Teaching Association as the Retired Teacher Director, BUT the best thing I will be doing in retirement is spending time with my grandchildren.
